Built Strong at Every Corner: Proslat’s Quad Corner Construction

Why Garage Cabinet Construction Matters: Beyond Steel Gauge

When comparing steel garage cabinets, steel gauge is one of the first specifications people look at. It tells you the thickness of the steel, but it does not tell you how that steel is formed, reinforced or connected.

That matters because two garage cabinets made from the same gauge of steel can behave very differently once assembled and placed under load.

A strong cabinet is not simply made from substantial steel. The structure needs to use that material effectively.

That is the idea behind Proslat Quad Corner Construction, which reinforces all four corners of the cabinet body to help create a rigid, stable structure.

Steel Gauge Is Only Part of Garage Cabinet Strength

Steel gauge tells you the thickness of sheet steel. It is an important specification, but cabinet strength also depends on:

  • How the steel is folded and formed
  • Whether structural sections are open or closed
  • How cabinet panels are joined
  • Where reinforcement is positioned
  • Weld quality
  • How the back, sides and front opening work together

In other words, a good garage cabinet should be evaluated as a complete structure, not simply by its steel gauge.

Proslat cabinetry uses substantial steel in its primary structure, but we also pay close attention to what happens at the corners, where the panels of the cabinet body come together.

What Is Proslat Quad Corner Construction?

Proslat Quad Corner Construction reinforces both front corners and both rear corners of the cabinet.

The front and rear use different structural designs because they perform different roles within the cabinet.

Reinforced Front Corners

At each front corner, the cabinet side panel folds back around to form a square box section.

That section is then welded closed.

The result is a structural column running vertically along each side of the cabinet opening.

This matters because the front opening needs to remain stable and square. It is the structure that the cabinet doors and drawers rely on for proper alignment.

Interlocking Rear Corners

The rear corners are constructed differently.

The side panels form U-shaped profiles that interlock with the cabinet's back panel. Those connections are then riveted and welded together, mechanically tying the sides and back into the cabinet structure.

Instead of the back simply closing off the cabinet, it becomes part of the reinforced assembly.

Together, the two reinforced front corners and two reinforced rear corners create the four points behind Quad Corner Construction.

Why Does a Box Section Make a Cabinet More Rigid?

Think about the difference between an open metal channel and a square metal tube.

Both can be made from the same steel. The difference is their shape.

An open profile has more freedom to twist. Closing that profile into a box connects the material around its perimeter, allowing the walls of the section to work together to resist twisting.

That is why steel thickness alone does not determine structural rigidity.

Where the steel is positioned, how it is shaped and how those sections are connected all affect how the finished structure responds to force.

At the front of a garage cabinet, that additional rigidity helps the cabinet opening maintain its shape.

Why the Rear of a Garage Cabinet Matters Too

A cabinet can also distort when its sides move relative to its back.

This type of movement is sometimes called racking, where a square or rectangular structure begins to skew under force.

Proslat's interlocking rear construction helps resist that movement by mechanically connecting the side panels with the back panel and securing those connections with rivets and welds.

That allows the back panel to contribute to the rigidity of the overall cabinet rather than functioning only as a rear cover.

What Does Cabinet Rigidity Mean in Everyday Use?

You may never think about the geometry of your garage cabinets after they are installed, but the structure affects how the cabinets feel and perform over time.

A more rigid cabinet body can help provide:

Less flex and twisting

Reinforced corners help the cabinet structure maintain its shape as loads and forces act on it.

Better door and drawer alignment

Doors and drawers depend on a stable, square cabinet opening. A rigid structure provides a stronger foundation for consistent alignment.

A more solid cabinet feel

Securely connected panels reduce unnecessary movement through the cabinet body.

Greater resistance to distortion

Reinforcement at all four corners helps the cabinet remain square through handling, loading and everyday use.

Garage Cabinet Quality Is About the Complete Structure

Corner construction is only one part of a quality garage cabinet.

Drawer slides, hinges, shelves, door construction, steel type, corrosion protection, weld quality and installation all contribute to the performance of the finished product.

But all of those components depend on the cabinet body they are attached to.

A rigid structure gives the rest of the cabinet a stronger foundation.

Look Beyond Steel Gauge When Comparing Garage Cabinets

Steel gauge is worth comparing when shopping for garage cabinets, but it should not be the only specification you evaluate.

Ask how the steel is formed.

Look at how the corners are reinforced.

Find out how the side panels and back panel are connected.

Consider the drawer hardware, hinges, doors, shelves and overall construction alongside the thickness of the steel.

With welded box sections at the front and interlocking, riveted and welded connections at the rear, Proslat Quad Corner Construction reinforces the cabinet at all four corners.

Strength starts with the steel. Rigidity comes from how we build with it.
